The Graduate Program in Electrical Engineering (PPGEE) of UTFPR campus Ponta Grossa has been approved at the academic master’s level, with concept 3. The concentration area is Control and Process of Energy, with the following research fields: Instrumentation and Control; and Energy Processing.

The Program role is promoting and disseminating the scientific knowledge in the research fields and specialties of the faculty members.

It has the following infrastructure:

  • Research Center: Laboratory with 100m² dedicated to research activities of the masters courses and scientific initiation students.
  • Laboratory of Power Electronics: place dedicated to experimental activities on power electronics.
  • Laboratory of Instrumentation, Control and Automation: place dedicated to experimental activities of optical and electronic instrumentation, electronic control systems and computer simulation.
  • Laboratory of Renewable Energy: place dedicated to research activities on renewable sources of energy, such as wind and solar power energy.
  • Room of computers: place with 20 computers connected to the internet for undergraduation and graduate activities.

Research fields

Energy processing
Power Electronics is the main matter of this research field that encompasses rectifiers, inverters and single-phase and three-phase DC-DC converters. These structures are responsible for electronically processing the electrical energy from renewable energy sources or commercial electric mains. In this sense, there are three main research fields: the electrical energy generation, the techniques of driving electrical machines and the switching power supply applications. The study related to alternative power sources intends to enhance the generation capacity of the country, with a reduced environmental impact. In this context, systems for processing the energy from sources such as solar, wind and biomass integrates this research field. These systems can be isolated or connected with the electrical mains. They can also be hybrid, when employ two or more distinct energy sources connected to a common node, and take part of distributed generation systems. The energy processing from the commercial electrical mains is needed in residential, commercial and industrial systems for supplying loads that demand specific supply characteristics. The energy processing in such systems enables the correct operation, automation, weight and volume reduction and increased efficiency, configuring an additional interest field of research.


Instrumentation and Control
The research field Instrumentation and Control aims to do research, analysis, characterization, design, development, implementation and assessment of measurement, analysis, drive and control systems with applications in energy processing systems, robotics, industrial instrumentation and control systems, distributed generation from renewable energy sources (wind and solar), smart-grid, micro e nanostructures, vibration, optical sensing and others. The specialized research areas involves study, characterization of basic properties, development of photonic and semiconductor sensors and devices and, in the same way, the study and application of advanced control techniques, that poses high importance due to providing indispensable tools in almost all engineering areas. Among the goals, we seek to contribute with cost and resources optimization in instrumentation and control systems, reducing losses, enhancing efficiency, reliability, security and robustness, and to look for the development of new solutions, resulting in development of projects and establishment of partnerships with companies in the field, as well as participating in technical and scientific events and written material production.
