5. Phase I: Documents analysis

The Phase I ranking of candidates will be based on the information found in the ad-hoc form

5.1. Rates will be calculated, based on each candidate’s Curriculum Vitae (CV) and Transcript of Records (ToR), as follows:

5.1.1. CV: Its value will be calculated by the following formula:

CV = (SI + M + CP + PP + PR + ST)/6 +IE, saturation in 1.0

where

SI is a value related to the number of years of engagement in the scientific/technology (or the like) initiation activity, with a value of 1.0 per year, up to a maximum of 3.0.

M is a value related to the number of semesters of engagement in education assistant activities developed in higher education, with a value of 0.25 per semester, up to a maximum of 0.5.

CP is a value related to the number of full papers published in conference proceedings, with a value of 0.2 per paper, up to a maximum of 1.0.

PP is a value related to the number of papers published in relevant journals (according to CAPES Engineering IV classification), with a value of 0.5 per paper, with no maximum score.

PR is a value related to the number of years in professional activities that are relevant to the area of concentration, with a value of 0.25 per year, up to a maximum of 1.5.

ST is a value related to isolated subjects taken in the CPGEI/UTFPR. It will be added 0.5 per subject passed with grades A or B, up to a maximum of 1.0.

IE is a bonus, of 0.1 in value, assigned to candidates who participated in institutional academic exchanges having a minimum duration of one semester.

5.1.2. ToR: Its value is calculated by the following formula:

ToR = CRG*QG

where

CRG is the standardized candidate's Performance Rate (CR) in their grade.

QG is a rate related to the quality of the institution where candidates got their grade. It is calculated using the General Course Rate (IGC / Índice Geral de Cursos) as shown in the following chart:

IGC

>= 4.0

4.0 < IGC <= 3.0

3.0 < IGC <= 2.0

< 2.0

Unrated

QG

1.00

0.80

0.50

0.3

0.1

5.1.3. CA: The CA index is set considering candidate's adherence to the research lines of the area of concentration. Criterion for setting this index is based on letters of recommendation, extracurricular activities of research and extension and courses taken, as well as on the research proposal.

5.2. Classification on Phase I

The score of the candidate in Phase I will be calculated by the following formula:

CC = 0.3*CV + 0.3*ToR + 0.4*CA

Candidates scoring CC >= (greater than or equal to) 0.5 will be invited to Phase II, subject to the teaching capacity of the body of teachers of the areas targeted by the candidate. The list of candidates invited to Phase II will be shown on the CPGEI website, in alphabetical order, on the date stated in subsection 3.4.

6. Phase II: Defense of the research proposal and interview

Candidate should have the defense of the research proposal and the interview approved in order to be selected for the program. This stage is aimed at evaluating the candidate, their potential, pretensions and availability, as well as assessing their defense of the research proposal. The interview will be conducted by a board of at least three (3) teachers. Candidates failing to attend the interview on the date, time and place scheduled and published in CPGEI notice and on CPGEI website will be eliminated from the selection process.

In this stage it will be assessed the candidate’s knowledge on the targeted area, as well as the defense of CV and research proposal. The postgraduate Program reserves the right to appoint a new research topic to the selected candidate. Thus, candidates may be inquired with regard to their interest and knowledge in areas of concentration of the postgraduate program.
